The Hearing Foundation

(Ear of the lion)

Who we are

The Hearing Foundation (Ear of the Lion) is a non-profit, 501© 3 public benefit corporation. Northern California Lions Clubs formed it in 1982. It is a MD-4 sanctioned Lions program. It has now expanded to clubs throughout California and Nevada. Clubs from all parts of California and Nevada are supporting it and referring patients to be assisted. The Lions realized that many who are hearing-impaired do not have the means to improve their hearing. The Foundation has a hearing aid bank and supports patients who need hearing aids. To date, thousands of patients have received care, through our efforts, that otherwise would not have been available to them. The Foundation's funding comes from Lions and Lions Clubs who understands and believes in our program. We also receive donations, both large and small from individuals who believe in our program. We have a trust fund where we deposit income from $250 Tosch Fellowships, $500 Life memberships, and $1000 Alexander Graham Bell Fellowships. Only the earnings from the trust account are used for operating the patient care program.

The Hearing Foundation (Ear of the Lion) is a non-profit, 501c3 foundation formed in 1982 and supported by Lions Clubs throughout California and Nevada. Its purpose is to provide hearing aids for the needy hearing impaired in California & Nevada.

Our program is not for everyone. It is dedicated to assist qualified low-income persons with their hearing problems, who are not eligible for any government-assisted programs, but are diagnosed as needing hearing aids. Annual Household income must be less than the following: Family of 1, $20,422; Family of 2, $27,527; Family of 3, $34,632; Family of 4, $41,737; Family of 5, $48,842, and going up in increments of approximately $7,000 per additional dependent. If annual income is more than the amount previously listed, the foundation may provide assistance depending on circumstances. Potential clients over the limit are asked to include a hardship letter, which is then reviewed by the Board of Directors.

The client must also be a U.S. citizen or legally reside in the U.S.

The first step in receiving hearing aids from The Hearing Foundation (Ear of the Lion) is to fill out and send in an application. A hearing test (audiogram) and Medical Clearance, both no older than 6 months must be included with the application. These are done at the clients’ expense.

Once the applicant has been approved for assistance, they must pay a non-refundable, one-time fee of $150 per hearing aid loaned. A local Lions Club, that is a member of the foundation, is then asked to sponsor the client.

The patient is then assigned to an Audiologist or hearing aid dispenser that works with the Foundation in their area. The Audiologist or dispenser decides what type of hearing aid will be best for their hearing loss, and impressions are made of the patient’s ear cavity and sent to the lab to be re-shelled and re-circuited to the patient’s need. It is then sent back to the dispenser to fit the hearing aid to the patient.
